A carved wooden wall piece, likely a temple ornamentation, depicting Quan Yin, a Bodhisattva, or later incarnation of Buddha, and the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy or Compassion. Quan Yin is depicted standing on a lotus throne, and holds a lotus flower upwards in one hand, symbolizing purity and womanhood, and a downturned willow branch in the other, symbolizing the fulfillment of people's requests or the healing of illnesses. The Goddess is also known the bringer of children, and was commonly found in temples, monasteries, and homes. Unmarked. Approximate height 16.8", width 4.5", depth 2.7". Note: Alternate spellings for Quanyin can be Guanyin, Guan Yin, Kwan Yin, Kwanyin, and Kuan Yin.
