Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, known as Diego Rivera, was born on December 8, 1886 in Guanajuato, mexico to a well-to-do family, the son of Maria del Pilar Barrientos & Diego Rivera Acosta. Rivera had a twin brother named Carlos, who died when they were two years of age. He was said to have Converso ancestry (having ancestors who were forced to convert from Judaism to Catholicism), & considered Jewishness to be a dominant element throughout his life. He began drawing (on walls in his home) at the age of three, so his parents installed chalkboards & canvases on their home walls. From the age of 10, Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, but later studied in Europe. He witnessed first-hand the beginning of Cubism while he studied in Paris, but shifted his own work toward Post-impressionism around 1917. His third wife was Frida Kahlo, whom he divorced
