An American Civil War era certificate signed by Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis making the appointment of John Cochran Nicoll (1793-1863) to the position of Attorney for the District of Georgia. Nicoll was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, a judge for the Eastern Circuit of Georgia, mayor of Savannah,and a United States federal judge, as well as district attorney for the Confederate States of America. Document dated by hand September 18, 1862, and signed by Jefferson Davis as well as Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin (1811-1884). The document bears at lower left the embossed seal of the Confederate States of America Provisional Government and publishing mark of Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, Virginia. Approximately 12.5" x 19.5".
