Poole Silver Co. (American (Massachusetts), founded 1893), circa 1951. A United States Navy sterling silver presentation box or casket of rectangular form with subtly domed top and everted lid rim, inscribed to cover "CAPTAIN D.C VARIAN / U.S. NAVY / FROM THE / OFFICERS AND WARRANT OFFICERS / OF THE / U.S. SALEM / 1951", the hinged lid opening to reveal dual wood lined compartments. Underside of box with impressed lion salient maker's mark over "STERLING / by Poole / 77". Approximate width 6.375", depth 3.5", height 1.625". Approximate overall weight 7.6 troy ounces. Note: Donald Cord Varian (Maryland, 1901-1969) captained the USS Salem III from January 2, 1951 until November 9, 1951, which during this time was part of the Atlantic Fleet for maneuvers, participated in intensive gunnery training at Guantanamo Bay, and was 6th Fleet flagship in the Mediterranean Sea. The U.S.S. Salem III was decommissioned on January 30, 1959, was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on July 12, 1991, and was donated to the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum, Quincy, Massachusetts on October 13, 1994 where it currently resides.
