English, 19th century. A very fine 19th century Victorian rectangular format silkwork (also called needlework) after the original painting by noted English painter Joseph Wright of Derby (English, 1734-1797), "Maria and Her Dog Silvio"-1781, depicting a scene from Laurence Sterne's (English, 1713-1768) 1768 novel "A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy" wherein the beautiful and grieving Maria sits beneath a tall tree with her dog, Silvio, as she mourns the death of her husband. Framed approximately 17.5" x 14". Sight approximately 13.5" x 10.5". Note: Joseph Wright of Derby was a famed portrait and landscape painter; he is strongly associated with the Industrial Revolution.
