George Morland (British, 1763-1804) The Spotted Dog Signed and titled within the composition on the signpost c. r., identified on a presentation plaque and on a label from the American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, Inc., New York, affixed to the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 30 in. (59.0 x 76.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, fine craquelure. Provenance: A Rhode Island estate. N.B. The Spotted Dog public house appears to be a real place and may be the establishment located in Chelmsford, England, mentioned by W. Toone in his compilation A Chronological Record, of the remarkable public events ... during the Reigns of George the Third and Fourth and His Present Majesty , published in London in 1843.
