Attributed to John Wesley Jarvis (Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City, 1780-1840) Portrait of Maria McKesson. 1825-30, Baltimore; Maria wears a black dress finished with a fluted lace white collar and a loosely hung lace fichu with matching high crowned bonnet. She was seated in a salmon color damask upholstered sofa. Unsigned. Oil on board, 31 1/2 x 26 in., in gilt frame. Condition: Good. N.B. John Wesley Jarvis was a portrait and miniature painter, engraver and sculptor born in England in 1780. He emigrated to Philadelphia where he apprenticed, and thence to Baltimore and New York City. Provenance: The sitter was the great, great, great grandmother of the consignor. She married William W. Taylor of Baltimore, June 12, 1792. He was a prominent Baltimore citizen who owned the Baltimore Fire Insurance Company. A copy of a photograph accompanies this lot. It shows the Baltimore home of Henry S. Taylor and his wife, who was the daughter of William Winchester for whom the town of Winchester, Massachusetts was named. Maria McKesson Taylor's portrait is on the wall in this Baltimore home.
