Antique 18kt Gold and Emerald Cross, prong-set with twenty step-cut emeralds, the terminals with depictions of Luke, John, Mark and Paul, foliate accents, suspended from an antique 14kt gold double strand fancy link chain, 101 dwt, lg. 31 1/2 in. Note: See lot 230. According to the papers provided, Pope Pius IX gave this cross to Maximilian, Hapsburg Emperor of Mexico from 1864-1867. The documentation purports that this was the same cross Maximilian kissed before facing the firing squad at Queretaro in 1867.
