Attributed to Thomas Chambers (London, New York, and Boston, 1808-1866) Threatening Sky, Bay of New York. mid-19th century. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, this view shows Castle Williams at the left and Staten Island in the distance at the right; the cylindrical castle, built 1808-11, was a three-story round tower, six hundred feet in circumference, on Governor's Island; there is also a brig at rest in the harbor, 18 x 24 in. (sight), in an original grain-painted frame. Condition: Unlined, original condition, with a 5-inch tear in the sky. Note: Thomas Chambers, born in England, was in New York City by 1834, listed as a "landscape painter." Subsequently, he listed himself as a "marine painter." He always worked in a distinctive, semi-primitive style. In the seascapes, his waves are opaque and capped with white. Many of his paintings show New York harbor and the Hudson River.
