Attributed to Frederick William MacMonnies (American, 1863-1937) Lovers Embracing Unsigned. Bronze sculpture, height 11 1/2 in. (29 cm), presented on a low black plinth. Condition: Wear to surface. Provenance: Gift from the artist to architect Thomas Hastings. N.B. In a letter discussing the work, Dr. E. Adina Gordon notes that "circumstances and information support the possibility that MacMonnies made the maquette entitled Lovers Embracing , and that he gave it out to be cast in France. Although the dating is not certain, I believe it was made in the last decade of the artist's sojourn in France, between 1905-1915, when it is known that he made many small sketches." We are grateful to Dr. Gordon for her assistance in cataloging this piece.
