Blue and White Woven Jacquard Coverlet, attributed to James Alexander (1770-1870), Orange County, New York, second quarter 19th century, cotton and wool double-weave coverlet woven in two lengths with an interior of six large floral medallions on a polka dotted background, border designs of Independence Hall flanked by eagles with overhead stars, and eagles with Masonic compass and square and columns, the name "PHEBE HULSE OCT. 14 1824" woven in the corner blocks, (minor toning, stains), 94 x 79 in. Literature: A similar border design on a coverlet attributed to James Alexander is illustrated in the book A Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers, by John W. Heisey, published by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1978, p. 69. The checklist entry for James Alexander indicates that he often incorporated eagles, Masonic emblems and Independence Hall into his border designs.
