Gold and Hairwork Memorial Brooch, with Civil War Correspondence Letters, New York, Louisiana, 1862-1866, oval gold brooch case with chased bezel and black enamel border surrounding an oval compartment containing lock of plaited blond hair, the back engraved "Mary A. Wentworth," accompanied by three letters written by Samuel A. Wentworth, while in service during the Civil War, in Baton Rouge, Port Hudson, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The letters were written to his ailing wife Mary, and their children back home in New York, brooch dia. 2 in.
