James Sanford Ellsworth (American, 1802/03- 1874) Portrait Miniature of a Gentleman Holding a Book. Signed "Ellsworth Painter" l.r. and l.l. Watercolor on paper, c. 1846, 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 in., in a period mahogany veneer frame. Condition: Minor toning. Note: The reverse with inscriptions from two different hands. One indistinct reads "David ----- Southampton Hampshire County, Mass, the other reads: "Born May 25/1805 Died March 27, 1882/Picture painted 1846."
