American School, 19th Century The Great Providence, Rhode Island, Hurricane of 1815. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1850, depicting the havoc that occurred September 22, 1815, where nearly 500 buildings were destroyed, showing numerous vessels, figures and buildings in the tumult of the high water, winds, and waves, 20 x 25 1/8 in., in a replaced frame. Condition: Relined, minor scattered spots of retouch. Note: An account of the disaster from the July 1966 issue of Rhode Island History is affixed to the reverse.
