Cased O'Dwyer-Type Diptheria Set, late 19th century, with seven gutta-percha handled probes and other instruments, in fitted nickel-plated case, wd. 9 in. Note: New York physician Joseph O'Dwyer (1841-1898) developed one of the first effective treatments for diphtheria. He inserted tubes into the throat to prevent suffocation from obstructed airways.
