American School, Early 20th Century Portrait of the Five-masted Schooner "Baker Palmer. " Unsigned, vessel identified on stern. Oil on canvas, 18 x 22 in., in a later painted mitered wooden frame. Condition: Minor retouch to a few spots on the sails, lacking stretcher. Note: The coal carrying schooner Baker Palmer was built and launched c. 1901 in Waldeboro, Maine. It was named after a benefactor, Captain L.D. Baker from the Boston area. It was the largest five-masted schooner in existance in 1901. Her first assignment was to sail to Newport News, Virginia to take a load of coal up to Boston. She was in service for fifteen years before she was lost at sea off Bermuda. Her crew and Master, Captain Perry Denton, were rescued and carried safely to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Canvas not on stretcher, but placed on frame with cardboard backing, the canvas is sagging on the bottom, where there are scattered very small spots of paint loss.
