Depicting a young woman in classical dress weeping at a tomb set in a landscape. The tomb with a Neoclassical urn resting above and inscribed in ink on "In Memory of Col. John Van Alen, who departed this life, December 15, 1784, aged 49 yrs. 3 mos. @ 6 days". Memorial piece in a period gold leaf frame with a reverse painted glass mat in black & gold with the notation "By Margaret Van Alen" Note: Col. John Van Alen, born 1735, died 1784, buried at Hudson City Cemetery, Hudson, Columbia Co., New York. Col. Van Alen donated the land for the cemetery and was the third burial there. 18 1/2" T x 18 3/4" overall.
