Chinese School, 19th Century, Portrait of the Bark MARATHON. Unsigned, inscriptions on the cardboard backing the reverse reads: " Hung Cheong Portrait Painter No. 165 Homura Road Yokohama," vessel identified on pennant. Oil on canvas, 18 x 23 1/2 in., in a later molded wooden frame. Condition: Relined, craquelure, retouch u.l., c.l., and l.r. Note: The bark Marathon was built in New York in 1863. In 1863 it's master was William Cummings. The canvas is hard to the touch but unable to tell what it has been applied to, because the cardboard backing is under the stretcher it may be applied to board or Masonite. Also a small abrasion at l.c.
