Lucy Elizabeth Kemp-Welch (British, 1869-1958) Work Horses Going Home , A View in Cornwall, England Signed "L. Kemp-Welch" l.l., identified on a label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, puncture u.l., scattered losses, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Lucy Kemp-Welsh is best known for her depictions of horses. Showing talent as a young girl and first exhibiting a painting at the age of fourteen, Kemp-Welsh studied at Hubert von Herkomer's art school. She was a favorite student and took over as principal in 1905. She enjoyed working outdoors and often completed several sketches in oil in preparation for her more finished paintings. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1895 to 1904 and her work is currently in numerous public and private collections including the Tate Museum.
