Three Central Plains Pipes, Lakota, c. 1900, the first with a catlinite faceted stem, the bowl in the form of a seated person holding a keg (?), with incised detail including a hand on one side; the second with painted and carved wood stem depicting a snake, (catlinite bowl damaged); the third with a catlinite bowl in the form of an acorn, with short wooden stem, lg. to 19 1/2 in. Provenance: Charles Pierce, superintendent of Indian schools west of the Mississippi River in the early 20th century, descended in the family.
