Frederick William MacMonnies (American, 1863-1937) Pan of Rohallion Signed and dated "FREDERICK MACMONNIES 1890" on the back of the sphere, titled and dated "TO. PAN.OF.ROHALLION ANNO DOMINI M.D.C.C.C.LXL" in relief around the base, inscribed "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N.Y." on the back of the base. Bronze with rich brown patina, height 49 in. (124.4 cm). Condition: Wear to surface. Provenance: A purported gift from W.R. Hearst to a private California collection through to a private New England collection. N.B. The trumpets held by the figure, the fish, and the globe all appear to be late, posthumous additions to the work. We are grateful to E.
