Engraved Powder Horn, Hampton, New Hampshire, late 18th century, the horn inscribed "Nathaniel Johnson 1779," "1776 1777 1778 1779," and a few other inscriptions including "BH, CP, S, L, 18," and what looks like a practice engraving of the name Nathaniel; the horn also embellished with engraved fish, fowl, anchors, a leafy plant, and a zigzag border, a rounded pine plug at the butt attached with wooden pegs inscribed with initials "N-J," approx. lg. 7 in. Note: Nathaniel Johnson was born November 13, 1749 in Hampton, New Hampshire, was married twice, and had three children. According to the book Joseph Dow's History of Hampton, Nathaniel Johnson was one of many enlisted from Hampton, New Hampshire, for service at Portsmouth and as coast guards, and at various points in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York during the Revolutionary War. When he died he was buried in the Ring Swamp cemetery in Hampton. His gravestone reads "Mr. Nathaniel Johnson died May 17, 1826: aged 76 yrs. 6 mo." A photocopy of these entries is included with the lot.
