DIRECTOIRE PERIOD DORE & BLACK PATINATED BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK, C. 1795, H 14", W 11 3/4":"Noble Sauvage". Titled "The Seaman Allegory to Trade". Dial signed "Chepin a Paris". The pyramidal shaped composition of this clock is dominated by the figure of a young black seaman who, in a very casual pose, has his elbow resting on a bale of tobacco leaves and is smoking a pipe. An identical clock is illustrated in Elike Niehuser, "French Bronze Clocks", PA, 1999, p. 142, figs. 234, 232, as well as P. Kjellberg, Encylopedie de la Pendule Francaise, Paris, 1997, p. 343, figure A.
