English, 19th century. English black lacquered and parcel gilt decorated papier-mache tray top table, the removable tray with scalloped border and inset with mother of pearl inlay depicting floral spray, rockwork, and water raised on 8 simulated bamboo legs united by turned stretcher. The underside of the tray with impressed Crown, Jennens & Betteridge. Height 19.5", width 32.25", depth 24.5". Provenance: From the Estate of Mr. & Mrs. H.C. Carson of Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Jennens and Bettridge aka Aaron Jennens and T.H. Bettridge (fl. 1815-1864) were highly regarded for producing quality papier mâché wares. They acquired the workshops of Henry Clay, Japanner to George III and the Prince of Wales, in 1816. Their original premises were in Birmingham and they started a London branch at 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia in 1837. Later offices were established in Paris and New York. Pieces by Jennens & Betteridge are currently on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
