Sold for:
$351,000

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania walnut schrank dated 1760 , the molded cornice over a frieze panel inlaid "Iohanes Spohr A Maria Spohrin anno 1760", with floral sprigs, over a case with a floral carved raised panel, over an astragal panel with tulip, scroll, and star inlay, flanked by linen fold pilasters and double raised panel sides, resting on a lower section with 5 drawers and boldly molded base, 85" h. , 66 1/4" w. With its dramatic profiles, fully inlaid fascia, baroque carved panel, and marquetry floral inlay, this piece embodies the height of Pennsylvania German cabinetry. The Lancaster First Reformed Church has a record for the birth of a son to John and Anna Maria Spoor in 1749. They were most likely the original owners of the piece, probably made to signify the building of a new home or other special event. Another related example is illustrated in Lindsey, Worldly Goods , pg. 8, fig. 13. For a nearly identical form lacking the extravagant ornamentation, see the Collect
