CHINESE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL (GU), H 11 1/4":Trumpet-form neck above a mid-section and base comprising geometrical designs and two cruciform apertures. Inscription underneath (see additional photo). Similar to Shang Dynasty examples. Measures H.11 1/4", Dia.6 1/8" at the upper rim. Provenance: From the collection of Mrs. G. G. Scranton, the friend and patroness of Mrs. Dagny Carter, a notable scholar of Chinese culture and art, and author of three books on Chinese art and antiquities. The piece was purchased by Mrs. Scranton subsequent to its discovery by Mrs. Carter in 1931. The current owners' grandmother purchased all of Carter’s art/artifact collection to enable Mrs. Carter to leave China during the period of Japanese incursion (1937-1939) prior to WWII.
