American, fourth quarter 19th century. American Spelter Figural Newel Post Lamp or torchiere with a patinated bronze finish, attributed to the Mitchell, Vance & Co. Gas Lighting Co (New York City), founded 1854) modeled as elaborately coiffed and robed classical maiden holding lamp aloft in the right hand, fitted with a pressed molded glass shade of ball form and set on a circular base. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 54".
