Attributed to Samuel Howes, (Massachusetts, 1806-1881) Portrait of a Woman Wearing a Blue Dress. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, circa 1839, depicting the brown-haired, brown-eyed woman wearing a blue off-the-shoulder dress with white lace trim, 26 x 22 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Craquelure. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine. N.B. The Portland Museum of Art approaches the decision to deaccession objects from its permanent collection with the utmost caution in adherence to a strict collections management policy that reflects the standards of the American Association of Museums. The proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned works of art are used only for the acquisition of other works more relevant to the Museum's mission. This process allows the Museum to better care for what it retains while strengthening the collection with new acquisitions.
