American School, 19th Century Style Portrait of the Sidewheel Packet "CHAS. CARROLL." Unsigned. Oil on canvas, depicting the vessel flying an American flag and billowing smoke and steam, with sightseers on the observation deck and a town on the distant shoreline, 16 x 24 1/8 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Scattered retouch prevalent to background, minor craquelure. Note: Accompanying the painting is the reference book Way's Packet Directory, 1848-1994: Passenger Steamboats of the Mississippi River System Since the Advent of Photography in Mid-Continent America, compiled by Frederick Way, Jr., Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, 1983, revised 1994. It describes the vessel as having a wood hull, and being built in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1846, weighing 349 tons. It was also "noticed at Cairo upbound, in March 1849 with 748 tons of freight procured at Field's Mills, Bayou Lafourche-said to be the largest single cargo ever brought up the Ohio By a Cincinnati boat. She was snagged and lost at Eddyville, Kentucky on Cumberland River, January 13, 1850."
