The front of the medallion features the words "Homenagem [Tribute] do Jornal dos Sports" above the Olympic Rings logo, with "1970-1980" appearing at the bottom. "Pelé" is engraved at the front center of the medallion. The back of the medal features low relief of the Jules Rimet trophy above the words "Mexico - 1970." The 1970 FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico and won by Brazil, which defeated Italy 4–1 in the final. The 1970 Brazil national football team is often cited as the greatest World Cup team in history.
