A Vermeil Medal of the City of Paris presented to Pelé by the city of Paris, France, on April 1, 1971. This highest distinction awarded by the city of Paris was presented to Pelé at Paris City Hall when his Santos FC team was in Paris to play a charity match for France's Cancer Research Fund. The front of the medallion features a low relief image of a ship that also appears on the Paris coat of arms. The ship is surrounded by the words "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" [Latin for Tossed but not sunk]. The motto has been used since at least 1358 by the city of Paris. The back of the medallion features the words "Ville [City] De Paris" and "Paris à Pele -1971-." The medal is accompanied by a framed Vermeil Medal certificate dated March 22, 1971, announcing that Pelé would be receiving the medal. The certificate is hand signed by the president and secretary of the Paris City Counsel. Also included is an original 1971 black and white news wire photograph from the London Bureau of the United Press International featuring Pelé at the Vermeil Medal presentation ceremony at The Paris Town Hall.
