Low Max Inc, New York, movement by Thomas Mercer, circa 1950. Unusual and rare, two-day going marine chronometer with 24-hour dial, 56-hour power reserve sector and half-second/10 second electrical impulse for regulating slave timepieces. Ebonized hardwood and bakelite with aluminium corners, aluminium bowl, held in place by black foam. Silvered, outer track graduated for minutes and 24 hours, aperture at 6 to view the seconds wheel and electrical contacts, up-and-down indicator at 12. Blued “Spade” hands. 82 mm, 13 jewels, brass full plate, ring turned pillars secured by screws, “oeil-de-perdrix” decoration, fusee and chain, Harrison’s maintaining power , Earnshaw spring-detent escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with two circular mean time weights and two temperature nuts, free-sprung helical balance spring with outer terminal curves. Dial, case and movement signed and numbered. Dim: height, width and depth: 21 x 21 x 15 cm
