“Giant Carriage Clock” John Moore & Sons, Clerkenwell, London, No. 14166. Made circa 1850. Very fine and rare, "giant" silvered brass 8 day-going double-train carriage clock, striking and repeating the hours and half-hours. Glazed on three sides and on top, molded and stepped top and base, massive fluted hinged handle, the brass back with shuttered holes for winding and hand setting, lever for regulation. Brushed silvered with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track. Blued steel “Quatrefoil” hands. Rectangular brass, both trains with fusees and chains, Harrison’s maintaining power on the going side, platform with lateral lever escapement, frosted gilt three-arm monometallic balance, blued steel flat balance spring, escape wheels and balance pivots jewelled, index regulator, striking the hours and half-hours on a coiled gong and repeating activated by depressing a button on the top. Dial and movement signed and numbered. Dim. Height 20 cm, width 15.3 cm, depth 12.2 cm., excluding handle. Notes John Moore was an apprentice of John Thwaites, the famous movement maker. He started a business with G. Handley at 39 Clerkenwell Close in 1798. G. Handley died in 1824 and John Moore carried on as John Moore & sons from 1824 onwards.
