“Exotic Dial” H. R. Ekegrén, Copenhagen, No. 17710. Made for J. E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia, circa 1880. Fine and unusual, keyless, 18K yellow gold hunting-cased lady’s pendant watch with decorated dial. Four-body, “bassine et filet”, polished with foliate engraved borders and band, the front cover with engraved foliate monogram, the interior with engraved dedication. Hinged gold cuvette. Grey and black, with white radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, Arabic five minute numerals on a grey foliate and lozenge painted ground, subsidiary seconds dial, the center decorated with a garland of flowers on a black ground. Yellow gold “Louis XV” hands. Notes Henri-Robert Ekegrén, (1823-1896) the son of Daniel Ekegrén, a Swedish watchmaker, he worked for Jules Jürgensenin in Le Locle, Winnerl in Paris, and Henri Golay in Geneva, where he arrived in 1847. In 1857 he formed a partnership with Ferdinand Westermann. At the 1867 Exhibition, he displayed thirty-six watches, winning a gold medal. Subsequent exhibitions - Vienna in 1873, Paris in 1875, Philadelphia in 1876, Paris again in 1878, and Zurich in 1883 - brought him and his collaborator Louis Chevalier further honors and recognition.
