MOSER GRANDE SONNERIE CLOCKWATCH Hy. Moser & Cie., Swiss, No. 2682. Made for the Russian market, circa 1890. Very fine and extremely rare, large and heavy, three-hammer and three-gong, carillon trip-minute-repeating, 18K yellow gold, Grande Sonnerie, keyless, hunting-cased, two-train clockwatch. Four-body, “bassine et fi let”, solid, engine-turned with polished borders. Hinged gold cuvette, glazed gold-rimmed cover over the movement. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds. Gold spade hands. 20’’’, rhodium plated, 35 jewels, two-train with tandem winding, straight-line counterpoised lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator, Sonnerie/Silent selection lever in the bezel, repeating with three polished hammers on three gongs activated by a trip button on the band. Dial, case and cuvette signed. Diam. 58 mm. Notes Johann Heinrich Moser (1805 –1874) A Swiss watchmaker, son of a clockmaker, about 1827 he moved to St. Petersburg where he opened a watch business (Nevskii Prospect and Malaya Konyushennaya St.). He also had a branch in Moscow. Moscow registers show that he had an offi ce there from 1827 to 1874 on Ilinka St. In 1874 his son Henry Moser, Jr. took over the business. The Moser Co. did business throughout Russia, even as far away as Vladivostock in Siberia. In the third quarter of the 19th century they became suppliers to the Tsar.
