David George Steell (British/ Scottish, 1856-1930). "Horses in a Field" - 1892, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "David G Steell". Painting depicts two pairs of horses, perhaps each a mare and foal, standing on opposite sides of a rough hewn wooden gate, a white horse and bay foal, the mare with ears back in a territorial posture, being closer to a country house that sets just above a small hill in the near background that fronts grassy rolling hills that spread far into the distance, and a bay mare and foal, each with white stripes on face, that stand center foreground backed by large trees. Framed approximately 37 3/8" x 52 1/4", unframed approximately 33 1/4" x 48 1/4.
