After Thomas Marie Madawaska Hemy (British, 1852-1937). "Wreck of H.M.S. Birkenhead", lithograph, published in 1893 by Henry Graves & Co. in London, England. Lithograph depicts a view of the crashed ship on February 26, 1852 near Capetown, South Africa. The "women and children first" protocol was born during this incident as the British soldiers aboard stood beside and allowed the women and children on the ship to board the few lifeboats that were serviceable. Panicking women and children are seen to the right of the tilted ship as uniformed soldiers stay left, away from the life boats. Inscribed below image lower left "Painted by Thos. M. Hemy" and lower center "Wreck of H.M.S. Birkenhead" above text describing the shipwreck. Framed approximately 45.75" x 37.5", sight size approximately 30.75" x 22.5".
