William Reid, Fecit, London, with London hallmarks for 1818. Fine and extremely rare 18K varicoloured gold watch with 18K solid gold movement. Three body, Empire, bezels pendant and bow with varicoloured gold cast floral and foliage decoration, engine-turned band, the back with a varicoloured gold vase of flowers finely chased over a matted ground. Gold with engine-turned centre, Roman numerals and two coloured gold cast decoration over a matted ground. Gold pierced hands. Hinged gold full plate with conical pillars, fusee with chain, cylinder escapement, plain gold three-arm balance, flat balance spring, plain gold cock with diamond end-stone. Signed on the back plate. Diam. 47 mm. Notes According to the inscription "Fecit", engraved on the back plate and the lack of any serial number, this watch was certainly specially commissioned with a solid gold movement or produced as an exhibition piece, such as a few watches produced on the continent or in the U.S.A. towards the end of the 19th century. No other English watch from the beginning of the 19th century, fitted with a solid gold movement, is known to exist.
