Vaucher Frères à Fleurier, Swiss, circa 1840. Very fine 18K gold, double-barrel, special escapement watch for 8-day duration. White enamel, Roman numerals, outer minute ring. 19’’’, fire-gilded, ruby duplex escapement, ruby impulse pin, fire-gilded monometallic balance, flat balance spring, jeweled on five wheels, with balance and escape wheels with endstones in châton.Signed on dial and case.Diam. 48 mm. Notes Moiré pattern engine-turning (in this case parallel waves with sharp breaks, skipping one out of every six) creates the illusion of a curtain behind which there is something magical.Vaucher Frères are best known for their watches for the Chinese market. This lot shows that they were capable of manufacturing high quality watches for the Western market as well.
