Edward Howard & Co. , Boston, Series II, No. 2038, made in 1860.Very fine and rare, 18K gold, hunting-cased watch. . & Bro", polished covers, reeded bezels, knurled band, gold hinged cuvette. D. white enamel, hand painted white enamel, hand painted, Roman numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary sunk seconds. Blued steel, "Spade" hands with polished faces. Notes Knurling-similarly to thread rolling-is a metal technique for making among others reeded bands. Under pressure, a knurling tool creates a surface pattern by way of metal displacement. These operations are usually carried out on a lathe, with a cutting fluid used for lubrication and cooling.
