Music LessonJean-Baptiste (II) DuTertre, Paris, No. 2909, hallmarked July 13, 1763 - July 18, 1764.Very fine and exceptionally rare small 20K gold and enamel, diamond-set, pair-cased quarter-repeating lady's watch. Outer: Two-body, gilt brass covered with red-colored shagreen; Inner: double-body, Louis XV, the back enameled with a scene of a young man teaching a young lady to play the flute, probably after Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), diamond-set bezel and pendant, bezels with applied gold laurel-leaf pattern. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with five-minute Arabic markers. Rose diamond-set "Louis XV" hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with turned pillars, fuseeith chain, verge escapement, three-arm brass balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass continental cock with polished steel endpiece. Repeating on a bell by depressing the pendant. Signed on dial and movement. Diam. 30 mm. Notes Jean-Baptiste (II) Dutertre (1715-1772)Came from a well-established family of watchmakers. His father, of the same name, was one of the first to experiment with double pendulum clocks, in 1742 Jean-Baptiste Dutertre (II) presented an interesting clock and equation watch to the Académie Royale des Sciences. He had a nephew of the same name who was also a watchmaker.
