The Hunting LionsGirard-Perregaux, Chaux-de-Fonds, No. 40124/331134, made for the American market, circa 1920.Very fine 18K gold hunting cased keyless pocket chronometer with special compensation balance. Four-body, "bassine", front with scene in relief of hunting lion and lioness, matted back, gold hinged cuvette. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track divided into fourths, five-minute Arabic markers, subsidiary sunk seconds. Notes Constant Girard (1825-1903)He changed his name to Girard-Perregaux after marrying Marie Perregaux, the daughter of a well know chronometer maker, had established his reputation as a maker of precision watches. The present lot is proof that he did not change his standards after he achieved his fame. The company did business first with Peru and Chili and later with Argentina, where this watch was most likely destined.
