Edward Digby, London, No. 8071, circa 1760. Fine and rare gilt brass and painted on enamel, paste-set pair-cased watch with concealed erotic scene. Outer: two-body, Louis XV, back painted with a shepherdess and her suitor in the countryside, two sheep in the background, inside painted with the same couple, but in a boudoir and in a different position, the front bezel with continuous landscape. Inner: two-body, “bassine”, polished, paste-set thumb-piece. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute dot divisions with five-minute Arabic markers. Blued steel “fleur-de-lis” hands. 22 mm, frosted gilt full-plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, brass balance with flat balance spring, single-footed cock.Signed on the movement.Diam. 33 mm Notes A good example of a continental watch made for the English market and probably finished and sold by Digby.
