J. Fournier, Bd. du Montparnasse No. 57, Paris, No. 1747, circa 1895. Fine mahogany 49-hour going marine chronometer with power reserve indication. Three body mahogany box with external brass handles, glazed upper section with hinged lid. Brass circular gimbal and bowl. Silvered with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and up-and-down sector. Gilt brass "spade" hands. Brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain and maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, two-arm compensation balance with poising weights and timing screws, free sprung polished steel helical balance spring, diamond endstone. Signed on the dial, movement and on the Mahogany box. In very good condition. Dial diam. 95 mm. Notes J. Fournier (18341920), Horloger de la Marine, began his production in 1888 and was awarded the 1st prize at the timing contest organised in 1889-1890, with his chronometer No. 2. He married the daughter of Delepine and became his successor around 1895. 1-Iis own production therefore followed the serial numbers of his fatherinlaw ' s. This chronometer is certainly among the first produced in his father-in-law' s workshop. A very similar chronometer by E. Delepine is described and illustrated by Hans von Bertele in Marine unto Tasehenelsronomeler, Galhvey 1981, p. 257.
