Brook Farm. The Harbinger, Devoted to Social and Political Progress . New York and Boston: Published by the Brook Farm Phalanx, 1845-1846. Twenty issues of the weekly paper, loose, as printed; volume II, numbers 1-8, 11-17, 19-20, and 24-26, some with folds and stains, other copies quite clean, 8 1/2 x 11 3/4 in. Brook Farm was a utopian community established by George Ripley and his wife Sophia in West Roxbury in the 1840s. This particular publication was inspired by the socialist Charles Fourier. Hawthorne, a founding member of Brook Farm, based his novel, The Blithedale Romance , on his experiences there. After a devastating fire, the farm ceased operations. By 1847, it was completely abandoned.
