Gillette, William (1853-1937) Two photographic portraits, one, sepia-toned, from earlier in his career, 11 1/2 x 9 in. , and the other depicting a grayer Gillette, signed, black and white, 8 x 10 in. Gillette was the first actor to portray Sherlock Holmes on the stage and in a now-lost silent film from 1916. Gillette invented the fundamental Holmesian phrase, "Oh, this is elementary, my dear fellow," and incorporated the bent pipe, the deerstalker hat, the magnifying glass, violin, and syringe as props for the first time.
