Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Brooch, Bezalel, Jerusalem, c. 1920s, depicting Moses revealing the Ten Commandments, flanked by scrolling wirework and florets, lg. 2 1/4 in., signed. Note: The Bezalel School, named for the architect of the Temple, was founded in 1903 in the Arts & Crafts tradition, with the purpose of creating a national style of Jewish Art that would blend European and Middle Eastern traditions. Like their counterparts in England, Austria and Germany, craftsmen produced objects in a wide range of media, including silver, leather, wood and fabric. Artists and designers were European trained, but those who executed the metal works were primarily immigrant Yemeni silversmiths continuing the craft of their forebears.
