Chinese, Shanxi Province, late 19th or early 20th century. A pair of black lacquer scholar's cabinets each with two doors surmounted by a scalloped open storage compartment, the doors decorated with painted vignettes comprising figures within landscapes, still lifes, and Chinese characters, opening to red lacquer interior with central shelf and two rows of shelf space, raised on four feet. Approximate height 74.75", width 46.5", depth 21.25".
