H. R. Ekegren, made by Ed. Koehn Geneve, Suisse, No. 86744, for J.E. Caldwell & Co. Philadelphia, circa 1920. Very fine 18K gold keyless presentation watch, jewelled with blue sapphires. Three body, massive, "demi-bassine " with concealed hinges, polished, the back engraved with the monogram " .S.". Hinged gold cuvette engraved with a dedication to an Officer of the U.S. Navy, dated 1921. D. White enamel with Breguet numerals and sunk subsidiary seconds. Gold Breguet hands. Notes Watches with blue sapphire jewel bearings are very rare, the most celebrated being the famous "Howard Blue Sapphire", reputed to be one of the best quality watches ever made in the U.S.A. and produced at 300 examples only. [According to the inscription engraved on the cuvette and the the mark of the U.S. Navy, this watch was certainly presented by the U.S. Navy to D.C. Sloan in 1921 for an act of bravery or in recognition of loyalty.
