The Muses. Theremin, Swiss, circa 1820.Very fine 18 ct. gold and painted enamel rectangular patch box, fitted with a watch with special escapement and a secret compartment for four game markers. Three-body, hinged, with canted corners, the top cover with Terpsichore and Erato, Muses of Dance, Love and Poetry, on either side of the inset oval watch, champlevé azure ground, white enamel frame with repeated pattern in gold, side panels and base in matching decoration, the base has a secret compartment hiding a gold tray with four gold discs, each enamelled with a different playing card suit. Oval, white enamel, Arabic hour numerals, outer minute dot divisions with fifteen-minute Arabc numerals. Gold hands. 17 x 27 mm, oval, engraved gilt brass, hinged, fixed barrel, virgule escapement, plain three-arm brass balance, flat balance spring.Signed on the dial.Dim. 75 x 38 x 19 mm.
